ABSTRACT
In the M2 generation, obtained from gamma rays (32 krad) seed treatment of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar Carioca (indeterminate growth habit), two determinate growth habit mutants were selected. These mutants also were nine days early in comparison with the original. Genetic studies carried out with one of the mutants (CAP-1070) indicated that the determinate growth habit is controled by one recessive gene, associated with earliness. After yield trials the better mutant (CAP-1070) was multiplied and distributed to be cultivated in regions of Paraná State. This mutant was included in the cross breeding program of "FT Pesquisa e Sementes", originating thus the cultivar FT-Paulistinha, released to the farmers of Paraná State in 88/89. The characteristics of CAP-1070 and FT-Paulistinha as well as aspects of mutation breeding in beans are presented and discussed in this paper.
