ABSTRACT

Some aspects of cancer cytogenetics are discussed here. Chromosomal rearrangements fall into three categories, based on the mechanism that promotes tumor growth: a) translocations, inversions and insertions; b) deletions and chromosome monosomies; c) amplifications. Oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes are involved in these alterations. Genomic imprinting, benign tumors and metastases are also discussed here.

Keywords: cancer; cytogentics.
