ABSTRACT
The variation in seed polypeptides and basic proteins revealed by electrophoretic profiles of 26 lines of Phaseolus vulgaris L. were statistically analyzed. Cluster and principal component analysis allowed for the construction of six affinity groups and these were consistent with the genealogical data. This relationship indicates the reliability of analysis by seed protein electrophoresis for the estimation of genetic relationships among common bean lines. The correlation observed between an isolectin band with a high contribution in the first principal component of the multivariate analysis and the capacity of extracts to agglutinate cow erythrocytes suggests the possible utility of simple agglutination tests as a discriminatory variable, even among related lines.
