ABSTRACT

Field data from southern Brazil pig populations participating in official on-the-farm performece testing programs were used to obtain genetic parameters for average daily gain (ADG) and probe backfat thickness (BFT). ADG was evaluated from an initial weight of 20-25 kg to a final weight of 90-100 kg and BFT was measured at the end of the test. Individual pig performance was expressed as a deviation from the mean of its corresponding contemporary group (herd, year, pen, sex and season). Models that used sire and sire+dam random effects provided the following ranges of heritability estimates: in the Landrace breed (3208 individuals, 200 sires), 0.232 to 0.287 for ADG and 0.088 to 0.252 for BFT; in the Large white breed (2437 individuals, 156 sires), 0.005 to 0.077 for ADG and 0.090 to 0.156 for BFT. Genetic correlations between ADG
