Software in PROLOG for Genealogical Analysis: Estimation of Intragroup Coefficients of Kinship, Relationship and Inbreeding

ABSTRACT

Specialist computer programs for Genealogica1 Mathematics have been important for interpreting complex population pedigrees. This paper presents a system written in PROLOG language, called SAGEN ("Sistema de Análise Genealógica" or Genealogical Analysis System), for use in IBM/PC equipment. The program calculates estimates of kinship, relationship, and inbreeding in several practical population situations, involving individuals, samples, and couples, as well as the entire population under study. SAGEN, presented in Portuguese (or optionally in English) was tested by analysing a highly complex simulated pedigree and part of a real Indian pedigree, and it was in both cases efficient in terms of precision and memory.
