Abnormal characteristics observed in spermatic cells during spermiogenesis in the ra mutant of Ceratitis capitata (Diptera, Tephritidae)

ABSTRACT

A mutation, of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata, induced by ultra-violet light, affects eye coloring, severely diminishes fertility, is autonomic, monogenic and recessive and causes behavioural modifications in the reproductive process. This study was undertaken to evaluate the ultrastructural alterations of mutant spermiogenesis that contribute to infertility. Morphofunctional modifications of chromatin compactation, of the mitochondria) derivatives, the axoneme, the plasma and of the nuclear membranes were encountered, clearly diminishing the number of viable spermatozoa produced by the RA mutant.
