ABSTRACT

DNA from the South American cricetid rodents Calomys musculinus and C. laucha was investigated. Restriction analysis of both genomic DNAs was performed employing twelve restriction endonucleases (RE). In all cases the restriction pattern comparison denoted a species-specific organization of the repetitive DNA sequences. Some RE gave rise after cleavage of one or both DNAs to highly fluorescent restriction bands, which may reflect sequence amplification events that may have occured in the genomes of the lineages that lead to the extant species, since their divergence from a common ancestor. The restriction analysis proved to be a very adequate means for an unbiassed classification of specimens of both species.

Keywords: restriction; pattern; differences; species; Calomys.
