Cytogenetics of fishes from parque florestal do rio doce (MG). I. Preliminary study of "Hoplias malabaricus" (Pisces, Erythrinidae) from lagoa carioca and lagoa dos patos^*

ABSTRACT

The karyotype of`Hoplias malabaricus"was analysed in specimens collected from two lakes — Lagoa Carioca and Lagoa dos Patos located in Parque Florestal do Rio Doce (Timóteo, MG).
The diploid number of chromosomes and fundamental number did not vary between the two samples; they were 42 and 84 respectively. Some of the samples collected from Lagoa Carioca presented a variation in the morphology of chromosome 5 suggesting the occurrence of a polymorphism in this population.
The nucleolar organizer regions observed by silver impregnation were multiple and the numbers varied from two to seven. An additional polymorphic trait was revealed by variations in the number and types of chromosomes containing nucleolar organizer regions. The constitutive heterochromatin was associated with nucleolar organizer regions at least in some chromosomes.
