ABSTRACT
Eleven seedcoat color mutants induced by ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) in Phaseolus vulgaris L., the parent variety Milionário 1732 and a version of it, Milionário Mulatinho 2104 (MM 2104), having a beige seedcoat bred through five backcrossing generations, were evaluated at Viçosa, MG, in 1987. Differences in yielding ability between each of five mutants and the original variety and between each of six mutants and MM 2104 were not significant. However, one mutant, also with a beige seedcoat, yielded significantly (P <0.05) more than MM 2104. Evaluation of the induced mutant lines and control varieties for several other traits indicated that overall changes induced by EMS in the high yielding mutants were similar to changes introduced by the conventional backcrossing method. Compared with the backcrossing method, the induced mutation technique allowed the isolation of several useful seedcoat color mutants in a shorter time and with less cost and labor. It is concluded that, for special breeding purposes, mutation induction is a valuable procedure which deserves more attention of plant breeders than it has received.
