ABSTRACT

Nucleolar organizer regions (Ag-NORs) were studied in metaphase chromosome obtained from mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocyte cultures of 25 normal women and 25 patients with breast adenocarcinoma. A comparison of NOR activity in lymphocytes from breast adenocarcinoma-patients with that of lymphocytes from normal, healthy women was conducted and differential NOR activity was detected. This difference in NOR activity is more pronounced in G chromosomes than D chromosomes and it is feasible that rDNA gene activity in PHA-stimulated lymphocytes is increased in patients with breast adenocarcinoma probably due to the presence of plasma mediators arising from celular malignancies. Probably, the NOR regions on G chromosomes are more sensitive to these mediators than those on D chromosomes.

Keywords: lymphocyte; nucleolar; organizer; region; breast; adenocarcinoma.
