ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to predict the behavior of sweet pepper F1 hybrids based on parental genetic divergence, as measured by Euclidean distance. Six sweet pepper cultivars were utilized: Linhagem p-14-8 (UFV), BGH18, BGH3041, Morrón, Amarelo Italiano, and Agronômico-10G, and all possible F l's (reciprocals excluded). The Euclidean distance was estimated from the first and second principal component scores (89% of total variation) resulting from the linear combination of eleven agronomic characters. The correlations between the parental genetic distance and the hybrid mean and heterosis (average % of the parents) for total yield, early yield, average weight of the sampled fruit and actual average weight of fruit, were positive, though of relatively small magnitude (<0.43). Even though the overall correlation was low, there was satisfactory agreement between the most divergent parental combinations and the hybrids showing superior performance. Therefore, genetic distance may be utilized as a criterion for choosing parents for crossing purposes. Based on this criterion, cultivars "BGH18", "Morrón", and "Amarelo Italiano" are recommended for intercrossing towards the formation of a base population for recurrent selection. As resistance to virus y is critical in Brazil, cv. Agronômico-10G should also be used.
Keywords: sweet peper; Capsicum annuum; hybrid; behavior.
