Alternatives to current tropical cauliflower hybrids obtained from self-incompatible inbred lines

ABSTRACT


Ninety six experimental cauliflower hybrids were tested against four commercial checks in two trials during the wet (summer) season of 1986/87 in Southeastern Brazil. The checks and 12 of the experimental hybrids were obtained from homozygous self-incompatible inbreds of the tropical cauliflower cv. Piracicaba Precoce (CFP) pollinated with a non-tropical cauliflower (NTCF) population or inbred therefrom; they can be considered representatives of all currently available tropical hybrids in the Brazilian market (category I). Category II comprised 54 hybrids, in which the female parents were clones (obtained from mass selection within the open-pollinated CFP and propagated via tissue culture), and the male parent was either an NTCF population (category II-A) or an NTCF clone (category II-B). Category III comprised 30 hybrids, in which the female parents were male-sterile clones selected during the previous summer as individual male-sterile plants in the F2 generation of (CFP x male-sterile-NTCF) and the male parent was either the CFP population (category III-A), an NTCF population (category III-B) or a CFP inbred (category III-C). At least 9 experimental hybrids in category I, 14 in II-A, 2 in II-B, 3 in III-A, 1 in III-B and 2 in III-C were rated better than at least one of the checks for curd weight and quality index. At least 7 of these hybrids (2 in category I, 2 in II-A, 1 in II-B, 1 in III-A, 1 in III-B) were rated better than the best commercial check.
