ABSTRACT
The number and location of active NORs of 13 Brazilian species of phyllostomid bats were analyzed. Intracellular variation in size of labeled NORs was common in all species. Intercellular variation in number of active NORs and interindividual variation in mean number of NORs per cell were detected in species with several NOR-bearing chromosomes. Interspecific variation in the location and number of silver-stained NORs was also observed and can be used to better clarify chromosome evolution within this family. A high rate of nucleolar fusion could be inferred in all species but the low rates of NOR association at metaphase indicate that the process of disruption of nucleolar fusion is usually complete before the next metaphase.
Keywords: variability; nucleolus; phyllostomid; bats.
