ABSTRACT

Serum creatine-kinase (CK) and pyruvate-kinase (PK) levels were measured in a total of 146 Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) carriers and 187 mothers of isolated cases belonging to two racial groups: caucasoids and negroids. CK was measured in 206 caucasoid and 127 negroid females and PK in 148 caucasoids and 92 negroids. The results of the present investigation showed increased mean enzyme activities in the group of negroid DMD carriers and mothers of isolated cases as compared with the caucasoid group. However, the difference was statistically significant only for serum CK. It is suggested that serum CK from females at risk for Duchenne dystrophy be compared with normal controls of the same racial group.

Keywords: serum; creatine-kinase; pyruvate-kinase; females; duchenne muscular dystrophy.
