ABSTRACT

Data about adenosine deaminase types are reported for 1067 specimens of Alouatta belzebul from the Tocantins river region in the Brazilian Amazon. Eight electrophoretic phenotypes were observed, which can be explained as being determined by four alleles. The degree of polymorphism found can be classified as moderate. A review of previous data indicates that about 40% of the Old World and two species of New World Primates are monomorphic for this locus, and in those in which it varies the number of alleles is two or three. In A. belzebul the Y chromosome has been translocated to an autosome. The ADA locus is not in linkage disequilibrium with male-determining genes, and therefore either it is not located on the indicated autosome or is located far from the region in which these genes have been relocated.

Keywords: adenosine; isozyme; variation; Alouatta belzebul; primates.
