ABSTRACT

We studied the puff patterns in zero hour prepupae of Drosophila melanogaster populations selected in the laboratory for many generations for differences in developmental rate. Lower mean values were found in the population selected for slow development than in the control and the population selected for fast development. As the balance between juvenile hormone and ecdysone is a determinant of the developmental rate and as ecdysone is responsible for the start of a cycle of puffs, many of which depend directly on its action (for example 47EF, 63E, 710E and 82EF), we suggest that differences in the regulation of these hormones may explain the variations in puff patterns observed here. On the other hand, the hybrid puff pattern between the selected populations suggests that the control of some puffs, such as 66B, may be due to a cis-regulator.
