ABSTRACT

The use of gametocides may represent an alternative for the practical exploitation of heterosis in oats. Several traits of oat (A vena sativa L.) plants treated with 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (Ethrel) were evaluated in field studies. The results varied with genotype, dose and stage of plant development at the time of application. The highest grain yield originating from cross-pollination was obtained when Ethrel was applied at the rate of 1.5 kg/ha immediately before pre-boot. Because of the high phytotoxic effects observed, the use of Ethrel as a gametocide in oats seems to be more appropriate in breeding programs requiring a large number of crosses and not needing large amounts of F1 seed in each progeny.

Keywords: male; sterility; oats; foliar; 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid; ethrel.
