ABSTRACT
Karyotypic studies were carried out on six species of the subfamily Tetragonopterinae (Characidae). The species Tetragonopterus chalceus, Piabina argentea and Brvconamericus stramineus revealed great karyotypic similarity (2n = 52, 13 M-SM pairs and 13 ST-A pairs). Deuterodon pedri showed 50 chromosomes, with 7 M-SM pairs and 18 ST-A pairs, but the chromosomes of Moenkhausia intermedia and M. costae, which also had 2n = 50, were all of the M-SM type. With respect to the nucleolar organizer regions, in each species there was a nucleolar chromosome pair that was the most frequent, although variations in number and size of these regions were observed. The chromosomal data thus far obtained permitted us to propose some hypotheses on the karyotypic evolution of this subfamily and to discuss the interrelationships of this fish group.
