Karyotype variability in Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Characiformes, Erythrinidae). I. Chromosome polymorphism in the rio negro population (Manaus; state,of Amazonas)

ABSTRACT

A Rio Negro (Amazon basin) population of Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (2n = 48) showed a polymorphic karyotype. Four distinct cytotypes were detected on the basis of number of meta-submetacentric (M-SM) and subtelo-acrocentric (ST-A) chromosomes and of ST-A size: Cytotype 1, 48 M-SM chromosomes; Cytotype 2, 46 M-SM and 2ST-A chromosomes of similar size; Cytotype 3, 46 M-SM and 2 ST-A chromosomes of different sizes, and Cytotype 4, 47 M-SM chromosomes and 1 ST-A chromosome.
