ABSTRACT
Electrophoretic analysis of 5 enzyme systems for a total of 12 loci in different developmental stages of D. melanogaster populations selected over 485 generations for fast (early) development and over 335 generations for slow (late) development, and of a control population showed structural genetic similarity, as measured by allele substitutions, which was 0.92 between control and late populations, 0.83 between control and early populations, and 0.75 between early and late populations. Regulatory similarity measured by the Jaccard index was 0.947 between control and early populations, 0.940 between control and late populations, and 0.908 between early and late populations. Similarity calculated by the Pearson coefficient was 0.949 between control and early populations, 0.940 between control and late populations, and 0.894 between early and late populations. It is suggested that divergence in class of regulatory genes may be of great importance in the speciation process.
