Anomalias de cabeça em espermatozóides de gado "pe duro" (Head defects in spermatozoa of "péduro" bulls)^*

ABSTRACT

The frequency of morphological abnormalities in sperm heads was determined for specimens of "pé-duro" cattle and compared to that of specimens from an elite herd to investigate the potential viability of "pé-duro" semen for storage for artificial insemination. Fifty percent of the "pé-duro" animals analyzed showed sperm head defects that made semen storage inadvisable. Furthermore, sperm cell concentration in the ejaculate of an additional 20% of "pé-duro" animals was low though few sperm head defects were present in the semen. These percentages may possibly be reduced by improving the zootechnical level of the animals. Testing for chemical changes in DNA-protein are also recommended for animals whose spermatozoa exhibit an acceptable percentage of head defects.
