ABSTRACT

The present paper describes 19 asymmetric bands in the polytene chromosomes of Sciara ocellaris. Eleven of them are in chromosome A, three in chromosome B, four in chromosome C and one in the X-chromosome. Band asymmetry could be grouped into three classes: (1) a thin band opposite to a single thick one; (2) a thin band opposite to two thicks bands, and (3) a thick chromomere in a chromosome without a counterpart at the homologous site. Polymorphism was quite extensive since an analysis of 15 bands in a sample of 368 larvae from a population cage showed a mean number of 4.95 ± 0.10 heterozygous bands per larva. Analysis of band morphology in larvae at pre- and post-DNA amplification stages showed that asymmetry is not due to somatic DNA amplification at these sites. Thus, the origin of these aberrations could not be determined and is still ascribed either to deficiencies or to duplications.

Keywords: asymmetric; polytene; chromosomes; Sciara ocellaris.
