Mobility, blood genetic traits and race mixture in the amazonian population of oriximina

ABSTRACT

Two-hundred and six individuals were variously studied for 16 blood genetic systems, concomitant information being also obtained concerning individual migration, marital and parent-offspring distances, as well as exogamy indices. This group can be characterized as having moderate mobility, with an increase of locally born individuals, but also increased migration of those born outside Oriximiná and now living there, with time. With some exceptions, the frequencies observed for these variables are similar to those obtained for another Amazonian population (Parintins). Genetic differences from other northern groups are not marked, being mostly confined to the ABO*O, ESD*2 and RH*D- values. The prevalence obtained for the latter genetic marker (33%) is the highest found thus far in the region. Of special interest, due to their rarity, was the detection of PGM₂*11, ACP*R and ALB*Maku. The estimated degree of accumulated admixture found in Oriximiná (57% White, 15% Black, and 28% Indian) is similar to those obtained for Manaus and Belém, but wholly or partially different from those of Trombetas, Parintins and Coari. These studies should be extended for the delineation of the main profile and of the genetic variability to be expected among Amazonian communities.
