ABSTRACT

We report the chromosome numbers and describe the karyotypes of 7 species of wasps of the tribe Polybiini (Hymenoptera, Polistinae) from the region of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The chromosomes were obtained from cerebral ganglion cells and from testis cells of prepupal stages. The following species were studied: Pseudopolybia vespiceps morph testacea, n = 8; Polybia (Myrapetra) scutellaris, 2n = 34; Polybia (Myrapetra) paulista, n = 17, 2n = 34; Brachygastrá lecheguana, 2n = 56; Protonectarina sylveirae, 2n = 58; Stelopolybia multipicta multipicta, 2n = 64 and Stelopolybia pallipes pallipes, n = 32, 2n = 64 chromosomes. The nests built by some of the species are also shown.

Keywords: cytogenetics; polybiini; wasps.
