ABSTRACT
Using a methodology developed by Martello et aL, 1984 (Rev. Brasil. Genet. VII: 157- 173) a comparative analysis was made of the estimated incidence of Down syndrome for São Paulo State (Brazil) in the years 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975 and 1980. These incidences have continuously decreased as a result of the decreased contribution by mothers over 35 years of age to the total number of affected. The demographic reasons for these findings are discussed, and comparisons of our data with other estimates are made.
Keywords: down syndrome; São Paulo.
