ABSTRACT

A total of 660 individuals was studied in relation to 13 genetic systems whose products are expressed in blood, with information also having been obtained for three measures of population mobility, i.e. individual migration, marital and parent-offspring distances. This population can be characterized as being of low mobility, 85% or more of the subjects having migrated less than 200 km. Rare variants observed among them were: a possibly new haptoglobin type, tentatively named Hp Aracaju, Cp Porto Alegre, Cp New Haven, PGD Natal and ACP R. Special studies were conducted to define the Hp 2-1M subtypes. The places of origin of these and other variants, considering two generations, are located along a North-South axis in the Sergipe territory, with special foci occurring on the Coast and in the region around the São Francisco river. The genome of the sample as a whole can be considered as typical of a northeastern Brazilian population, with differences occurring in individuals with distinct racial classifications. The accumulated degree of admixture has been estimated as 62% White, 34% Black and 4% Indian

Keywords: demography; genetics.
