ABSTRACT

Crossing over was studied in females and males of Drosophila ananassae in inversion heterozygotes and homozygotes by utilizing three recessive markers of the second chromosome to detect the intrachromosomal effect of a lengthy inversion in 2L. The results showed that the inversion heterozygosity in 2L completely eliminates crossing over between the cu and b genes in both sexes, indicating their inclusion within the inversion. In the second region (b-se) recombination was observed in both sexes under both karyotypic combinations (ST/AL and AL/AL) though males showed a very low rate of crossing over. There is some indication of an increase of crossing over in the second region in females and males heterozygous for the inversion when compared with data for homokaryotypic F t flies. This suggests that inversion heterozygosity suppresses crossing over completely within its limit but may enhance the recombination frequency Outside the inverted zone. Based on the data of AL/AL females, the three genes have been mapped and a comparison of map distance based on the results reported in this paper and reported by earlier workers has been made.
