Variação genética oculta em alface da cultivar salad bowl (Concealed genetic variation in salad bowl lettuce)

ABSTRACT
A dark green mutant of the lettuce cultivar "Salad Bowl" produced 141 plants. The offspring demonstrated that the mutant plant was heterozygous for about 11 genes (22 alleles), namely: 2 for leaf color, 2 for resistance to Rhizoctonia solani, 1 for early flowering, 1 for spiny leaves, 1 for branched inflorescences, 3 for light yellow flowers, and 1 for smooth leaves. These genes reveal either a high rate of mutation, or high heterotic value or both.
