ABSTRACT
The 844 cases in this study were derived from a series of 671,494 consecutive livebirths examined in 59 hospitals in South America. Genetic and environmental risk factors were investigated in the sample of malformed newborns with talipes equinovarus (TEV) and in control babies. An excess of boys was found among all babies with TEV. The data suggested difference between the TEV cases and control cases in the frequencies of birth presentation and multiple birth, consistent with the theory that intrauterine compression is an important etiological factor in talipes equinovarus. Furthermore, the data showed no relationship between the risk of disease and the proportion of primiparae or time between gestations. No significant difference in inbreeding coefficient was detected between the propositi and the controls. The proportion of non-Latin European ancestry was higher in the TEV cases than in the controls, but the sex proportion was the only evidence of heterogeneity between the TEV group of non-Latin European ancestry and the other ethnic groups.
