ABSTRACT
We present here the chromosome numbers of 41 angiosperm species belonging to 35 genera collected in the State of Pernambuco. A table with the herbarium voucher, diploid number, possible ploidy level, collecting sites and previous reports for all the species is presented, as well as photographs of chromosomes belonging to 30 of these species. Nineteen species have not been previously reported. Amongst the other 22 species, only one, Eulophidium maculatum, has an unexpected chromosome number. As a rule, we have- analyzed ten or more germinated seeds for each plant in different populations. No intraspecific variation in chromosome number or morphology was observed. Most of the species showed small metacentric to submetacentric chromosomes and just one pair with a secondary constriction. The ploidy level was defined using the basic genus number. In three genera (Genipa, Momnieria and Basiloxylon), for which no counts had been made previously, the ploidy level was estimated from one of the basic numbers of the family.
